Mosquitoes in December in Florida are fewer than in August, but they haven’t left. If you’re hosting a holiday dinner, a birthday, or a New Year’s gathering outdoors, you’ll be in the yard at dusk, when several species bite most. A warm, damp week before your event brings their numbers back up.
Evergreen Lawn & Pest Control has cared for properties across Central and South Florida since 1991, and our technicians time mosquito treatment to your party date. For the fall picture, read our earlier guide to fall mosquito activity.

Are There Mosquitoes in Florida in Winter?
Yes. Mosquitoes follow temperature and rainfall, so December numbers depend on your region and the week’s weather. The state’s public health pest control manual says northern mosquito populations drop in winter because of colder temperatures, while winter breeding in the south slows because of less rain. This means a warm, wet week gives mosquitoes the water and warmth they need, while a cool, dry week removes both.
South Florida
Miami-Dade County’s December 2025 press release notes that most mosquito species stay active above 50°F, and the county reminded residents mosquitoes don’t leave when the heat and rain ease. Plan for mosquitoes at any outdoor party in this part of the state, and call for treatment as soon as you set the date.
Central Florida
Activity usually falls as temperatures and rainfall decline, but warm spells bring mosquitoes back. The state manual also notes three species breed all year. If the forecast shows warmth and rain the week of your event, tell us when you call so we time the visit to the weather.
Gulf Coast
Hillsborough County’s mosquito program says cooler, drier weather is less favorable for mosquitoes, and residents still need to remove breeding sites.
North Florida
December activity runs lower in North Florida because colder temperatures suppress mosquitoes.
Do Mosquitoes Die in Cold Weather?
Cold weather kills individual mosquitoes, but the population carries on. Species overwinter as eggs, larvae, or adults, and mild winters let some adults stay active during warm periods.
Eggs wait out cool or dry weather and hatch when water returns, which is why a yard looks quiet on Monday and busy after Thursday’s rain.
How Far Ahead Should You Treat Your Yard?
Timing depends on the treatment type. Schedule a residual treatment (a treatment left on resting areas to keep working) a few days before your event. Short-term fogging (a quick-acting treatment applied close to the event) suits the day before or the morning of your party.
If your party is in three days, call anyway, since same-day service is available when our schedule allows. Our technician explains which treatment fits your date and why.
How Do You Prepare Your Yard Before the Party?
Mosquito eggs hatch in standing water, so the water you remove this week means fewer mosquitoes at your party.
Walk your yard and empty each of these:
- Flowerpot saucers – Pour them out and wipe the rim.
- Bird baths – Scrub them and refill with fresh water.
- Buckets and watering cans – Turn them over so they hold no rain.
- Gutters – Clear leaves and branches so water drains.
- Unused planters, toys, and tires – Move them under cover or discard them.
Repeat this walk after any rain, and tell your technician what you emptied so we treat the places where water still collects.
What Should You Do During the Party?
Set a fan in each seating and dining area, since mosquitoes fly poorly in moving air. If the forecast is warm and damp, seat guests on a screened porch or lanai. Set out EPA-registered repellent and follow the label. Start your party in the afternoon and move guests under fans or inside at dusk.
How Does Our Mosquito Control Work Before an Event?
We follow Integrated Pest Management principles: identify what contributes to the problem, apply a targeted treatment, then monitor the results.
Our licensed, insured technicians walk the yard, identify the spots mosquitoes use, and explain what each treatment does before applying it. We close your gate behind us when we finish.
We offer free estimates, and if you’re not completely happy with the results, we’ll make things right, no questions asked.
Schedule Mosquito Control Before Your Next Outdoor Event
December mosquito activity drops in cool, dry weather and returns after a warm, wet stretch. Dump standing water, treat a few days ahead or the day before, and plan fans and repellent for dusk. Evergreen Lawn & Pest Control has served property owners since 1991, and we’ll build the plan around your date.
