High-Alkalinity Coastal Shell Rock vs. Muck Soils

Palm Beach County sits over two fundamentally different soil substrates, depending on location. Coastal and barrier island properties sit above oolitic limestone and shell rock, high-pH, rapidly draining substrates that limit nutrient availability and create chronic iron and manganese deficiency in St. Augustine turf.

Western county properties near Wellington and the agricultural transition zone sit above organic muck soils with entirely different drainage, compaction, and fertility dynamics. These two soil environments need different amendment strategies, different fertility programs, and different approaches to managing the turf stress that makes properties vulnerable to pest pressure.

Ficus Whitefly and Tropical Canopy Pressures

Palm Beach County's mature urban tree canopy, including the ficus hedges, gumbo limbo corridors, and tropical ornamental plantings that define neighborhoods from Palm Beach Gardens to Boca Raton, faces sustained pressure from ficus whitefly and rugose spiraling whitefly populations that have become permanently established throughout South Florida's landscape.

In Palm Beach County specifically, the density and continuity of ficus hedging along residential boundaries mean infestations spread laterally between properties faster than in communities with more varied ornamental compositions.

Protecting established canopies here means getting systemic treatment programs that address the full hedge network rather than individual plant responses, along with proactive monitoring that catches new infestations before they reach neighboring properties.
